Question
How do I reserve an IP address to a client in my G34/G36 gateway?
Answer
In certain cases, it is best for a client to receive a particular IP address from the G34/G36 and always keep that address without having to manually configure it in the client.  This can be accomplished by reserving an IP Address to a client's MAC address.  When the client disconnects and reconnects to the G34/G36, it will receive the IP address that it has been assigned.

It is recommended to setup an IP Address Reserve for clients that are configured to use Port Forwarding or DMZ.  This document contains the following sections:


Reserve IP Address Setup
  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The https:// Redirect page will appear.   
     
  2. The SURFboard Web Manager is begin redirected to a more secure connection, click the Proceed button to continue.  The Gateway > Login page will appear.

  3. A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager.  There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager.  For instructions to by-pass the alert screen, refer to article # 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.

    NOTE: The Home Network Wizard will appear if this is the first time accessing the Web Manager.  For assistance with the wizard, refer to article # 19077 - G34/G36: Web Manager First Time Login.
     
  4. The Username field has admin populated, enter the custom password in the Password field.

    NOTE: If the Login page prompts for email address and password, retrieve the email address and password in the app to sign-in.  For detail instructions in the app, refer to article #19069 - SURFboard Central: Web Manager Access.
     
  5. Click the Login button.  The Gateway > Summary page will appear.

  6. On the left-hand menu, click on Connected Devices.  The Connected Devices > Devices page will appear. 
     
  7. Locate the client under the Host Name in the Online Devices section, for the Reserve IP setup.   User-added image


Reserve IP Address Setup For Connected Devices
  1. Click the + button for the Host Name of the client.  The Manually Add Static Device window will appear.

  2. Enter a new name or keep the populate client device name for the Host Name field.
     
  3. It is recommended to reserve an IP address assigned to the client device.  To reserve the assigned IP address, do not change the last octet in the IPv4 Address field.

    NOTE: To reserve a different IP address, enter an address (between 2 to 254) that is not in use by another client device.  Check the Online Devices section to view the IP addresses that are in use to determine available IP Address for this setup.
     
  4. The Comments box is optional, enter comments up to 63 characters. 
     
  5. Click the Save button.  The changes were saved successfully! window will appear.

  6. Click the OK button.  The Connected Devices > Devices page will appear.

  7. Disconnect the client from the G34/G36 and reconnect it. 
     
  8. Press the F5 button to refresh the browser, then click the Host Name of the device to expand and verify that the Configuration field is set for Static.

Reserve IP Address Setup For Devices Not Connected

The MAC Address of the disconnected client is require for this setup and can found on the device network information.
  1. On the left-hand menu, click the Static Addresses link to add the client manually.  The Connected Devices > Static Addresses page will appear.
     
  2. Click the Manually Add Static Device button.  The Manually Add Static Device window will appear.

  3. Enter a name of the client in the Host Name field.  
     
  4. Enter an available IP address (between 2 to 254) in the IPv4 Address field.
     

    NOTE: It is required to reserve an IP address that is not in use by another client device.  Check the Online Devices section to view the IP addresses that are in use to determine available IP Address for this setup.
     
  5. Obtain the MAC Address on the network information of the client and enter it in the MAC Address field.  The MAC Address format is XX:XX:XX:SS:SS:SS.
     
  6. The Comments box is optional, enter comments up to 63 characters. 
     
  7. Click the Save button.  The changes were saved successfully! window will appear.

  8. Click the OK button.  The Connected Device > Static Addresses page will appear.

  9. The Reserved IP entry will be displayed under the Static Addresses section.

  10. When the client connects to the G34/G36 it will receive the reserved IP and be displayed on the Connected Device > Devices page under the Online Device section.

Remove Reserve IP Address 
  1. To remove the Reserved IP, locate the Host Name of the device and click the X button.  The changes were saved successfully! window will appear.

  2. Click the OK button.  The Connected Devices > Devices page will appear.

  3. Disconnect the client from the G34/G36 and reconnect it.
     
  4. Press the F5 button to refresh the browser. then click the Host Name of the device to expand and verify that the Configuration field is set for DHCP.
