Where can I obtain backup battery for my Pace 5268AC?
Answer
In the event of an AC power outage, the Pace 5268AC residential gateway/router can utilize a rechargeable lithium-ion battery to automatically and instantaneously continues to power the router.  The main purpose of a backup battery is to maintain telephone service through Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), so that emergency calls can be made during the power outage. 

When AC power is available, the router maintains the state of charge of the battery to keep it ready for emergency operation.  The charging circuit is contained entirely in the router; there is no external charger.

The system tests the battery periodically to determine its state of health and readiness.  If the system finds the battery is not able to provide adequate backup time for the router, it will notify the customer that that the battery should be replaced with a new one.  Notification takes various forms: The front panel Battery LED will flash red, and audible alerts will be given via the telephone system.

Like most batteries, lithium-ion batteries gradually deteriorate over a period of time, even when not being used.  The rate of deterioration is made worse by high ambient temperatures.  For best battery longevity, the router should be located in as cool a place as practical and should be oriented vertically such that the battery compartment is beneath the rest of the assembly.

How to obtain a battery

Batteries for the Pace 5268AC residential gateway can be ordered directly from our http://shop.surfboard.com web site.

Please buy only approved batteries.  An unapproved battery pack will be rejected by the software.  The system is designed to do this to ensure battery safety and reliability. 

 

How to Install a new battery
  • Locate the battery compartment on the base of the router.  Remove the door to the battery compartment by operating the latch.
     
  • Remove the old battery by pulling on the tab.  Install the new battery in the same orientation as the old one it replaces.  The battery pack can only fit one way.
     
  • Replace the battery compartment door.  Push the latch closed.  If the battery is not installed correctly, the latch will not snap closed.

How to dispose of the old battery

Lithium-ion batteries do not contain toxic metals, so they are generally classified as non-hazardous waste.  Recycle the battery at your local recycling center.  Do not dispose in regular garbage/trash.
 

Safety Information

This battery is a lithium-ion battery which contains a large amount of energy and is manufactured with safety features incorporated.  Mishandling may cause the battery to leak, catch fire, or explode and result in personal injury and/or property damage.

  • Never dispose of batteries in fire.
  • Keep batteries away from combustible materials.
  • Do not short circuit the battery across its terminals (connectors).
  • Do not tamper with, disassemble or crush the battery.
  • Handle damaged batteries with care; personal injuries may result from mishandling.
  • Keep batteries away from small children.
CAUTION: The battery used in this device may present a risk of fire or chemical burn if mistreated.  Do not disassemble, heat above 60°C or incinerate.  Replace battery with Li-ion Rechargeable battery pack, manufactured by PACE, model number 239-0990857 or Palladium Energy Inc., P/N 990857 only.  Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion.  Dispose of Used Batteries According to the Instructions.

Support - Stop the Warnings

The residential gateway/router automatically notifies you when the battery is at the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced.  It does this by periodically ringing your phone with a “splash” ring and printing a message on the Caller ID display of your telephone, if available.  It also plays a recorded message into your phone when you take the phone off hook to make a call.

If you replace the old battery with a new one, the warnings will stop automatically.


You can also stop the warnings before you replace the battery, as described below.  If you do this, remember to obtain a new battery and replace the old one.  If you forget to do so, you risk not having battery backup for telephone service during a power outage.

To stop the telephone from reminding you with its “splash” ringing:

  • Access the residential gateway’s internal web page by opening a web browser and entering http://192.168.1.254 as the destination address. 
  • Navigate to the Services -> Voice -> Alerts page and uncheck the Enable Alerts check box(es) 

To stop the robotic telephone voice from reminding you with its message during dial tone, dial *#103.

Now that you have stopped the warnings, don't forget to obtain a new battery and replace the old one.
