The SBG6580 Parental Control feature provides the ability to control access to Internet content based on keywords, domain names and/or day and time. Users can be associated with policies to allow or block specific URLs or prevent access to sites containing keywords. Access is controlled by password. Parental Control is not enabled by default.
Configuration of Parental Control is comprised of these general steps:
User Setup Description
The SBG6580 Parental Control User Setup page, allows each user to be linked to a specified Time Access rule, Content Policy, and login password to get access to the filtered content. A user can also be specified as a "trusted user," in which the user will have full access to the Internet regardless of the filters that are defined.
Users are required to enter their password once to access the Internet, however it is not necessary to enter the password again when a new web page is accessed. If there is no Internet activity within a specified time frame, the user must login again to gain access. This document describes how to setup a Parental Control user.
To Create a User
Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box.
NOTE: By default the LAN IP address is 192.168.0.1. If the default address has been changed, enter the custom address in the address box.
- Enter admin in the Username field.
- Enter motorola in the Password field.
- Click the Login button. The Status Connection page appears.
- Click the Parental Control link on top of the screen. The Parental Control Basic Setup page appears.
- Click the User Setup link on the left hand column. The Parental Control User Setup page appears.
- On the Parental Control User Setup page:
a. User Configuration - Enter a user name and click the Add User button.
b. User Setting - From the drop-down list, select the User to modify access restrictions and checkmark the Enable box.
NOTE 1: To disable a user, select the user name from the drop-down tab and uncheck the Enable box.
NOTE 2: To remove a user, select the user name from the drop-down tab and click the Remove button.
c. Password - Enter a password to log onto the Internet.
d. Re-Enter Password - Enter the password again for confirmation.
e. Trusted User - Allows users to override Content Rules without having to turn off filter settings. If, enabled, the selected user will have full access to the Internet.
f. Content Rule - White List Access Only
NOTE 1: Enable this option if an Allow policy has been created.
NOTE 2: Leave this option disabled if an deny/block policy has been created.
NOTE 3: Content Rule is used to specify which websites a selected user is allowed to access. For assistance with Internet content, please refer to Answer # 20831 - SBG6580: Parental Control Content Policy Setup.
g. Select a rule from the drop-down tab.
h. Time Access Rule - Select a rule from the drop-down tab, that restricts when a selected user can use the Internet.
NOTE: Time Access Rule is used to specify which time a selected user can have access. For assistance with Time Access, please refer to Answer # 20829 - SBG6580: Parental Control Time of Day Access Policy.
i. Session Duration - Enter the amount of time a selected user can use the Internet.
j. Inactivity Time - Enter the amount of inactivity time before the Internet automatically closes for a selected user.
- Click the Apply button to activate and save changes.
To Enable Parental Control
- Click the Basic link in the left hand column. The Parental Control Basic Setup page appears.
- Checkmark the Enable Parental Control box under the Parental Control Activation heading.
- Click the Apply button to save changes.
