Question

How do I configure my SBG6580 for WPA-PSK wireless connection?

Answer

The SBG6580 includes configuration options for the wireless LAN (WLAN).  WPA (WiFi Protected Access) - PSK (Pre Shared Key) provides the best data protection and access control.  The Primary Network is enabled and uses WPA-PSK encryption by default.  This document describes how to configure the SBG6580 to use WPA-PSK encryption.

NOTE: Older wireless client cards may not support WPA or WPA2 encryption methods.  If a wireless card is not compatible with WPA or WPA2, either the gateway will need to be configured to use WEP encryption, or the wireless card will need to be replaced with a newer card that is compatible with WPA or WPA2 encryption.

Configuration

  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box.

NOTE: By default the LAN IP address is 192.168.0.1.  If the default address has been changed, enter the custom address in the address box.

  2. Enter admin in the Username field.
  3. Enter motorola in the Password field.
  4. Click the Login button.  The Status page appears.

    b.   Scroll back up to the top of the page.
    c.   Primary Network - Click on the drop-down menu, and select Enabled
    d.   Network Name (SSID) - Change this setting to the desired name, or leave at the current setting.
    e.   Closed Network - Click on the drop-down menu, and select Disabled.
    f.    WPA - Click on the drop-down menu, and select Disabled.
    g.   WPA-PSK - Click on the drop-down menu, and select the desired setting (Enabled or Disabled).
    h.   WPA2-PSK - Click on the drop-down menu, and select the desired setting (Enabled or Disabled).

NOTE: Enable WPA-PSK for backward compatibility, WPA2-PSK for maximum security, or both for maximum interoperability.  In the example below, both WPA-PSK and
          WPA2-PSK are enabled.

    i.    WPA/WPA2 Encryption - Click on the drop-down menu, and select the desired setting (TKIP, AES, or TKIP+AES).

NOTE 1: Select TKIP for backward compatibility, AES for maximum security, or TKIP+AES for maximum interoperability.  In the example below, TKIP+AES is enabled.

NOTE 2: If TKIP is not listed as an option, and if it is desired to use TKIP, choose TKIP+AES.

    j.    WPA Pre-Shared Key - Enter the desired WPA key (wireless password) to use.  The WPA key must be 8 - 63 characters.
    k.   Show Key - Check this option if it is desired to view the WPA Pre-Shared Key.
    l.    Group Key Rotation Interval - Keep this setting at 0

The SBG6580 is now configured to allow wireless client connections using WPA-PSK encryption.

To make a connection, the wireless client must have WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK encryption enabled and have the
same WPA encryption key as the Motorola Wireless Gateway.  For assistance with the wireless client:
