Question
How do I allow or restrict connection to the wireless network in my SBG6580?
Answer

The Access Control feature in the SBG6580 determines whether wireless clients are allowed or denied access to the wireless network.  When enabled, Access Control can be set up in one of two ways:

  1. Allow access to everyone, except the clients listed.
  2. Deny access to everyone, except the clients listed.

Whether if access is allowed or denied is determined by the client's MAC address.  For instructions on how to locate the MAC address in Windows and Mac operating systems:

Refer to Answer # 22248 - Windows 8: Finding the MAC address
Refer to Answer # 20613 - Windows 7: Finding the MAC address
Refer to Answer # 20446 - Finding the MAC address in Windows and Macintosh systems
For all other devices, please refer to the manufacturer to locate the MAC address.

NOTE: Even if a client is allowed by Access Control to connect to the wireless network, it will still need an encryption key to connect (if encryption is enabled for that wireless network).

Access Control is disabled by default.  This document describes how to enable and configure Access Control.

To Configure Access Control

  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page appears.

NOTE: By default the LAN IP address is 192.168.0.1.  If the default address has been changed, enter the custom address in the address box.

  2. On the Login page:
    a.   Enter admin in the Username field.
    b.   Enter motorola in the Password field.
    c.   Click the Login button.  The Home page will appear.

NOTE: On firmware version 8.9.0.4 and later, the default admin password is required to be changed.  The Change User Password prompt will immediately appear after logging into the Web manager with the default admin password.  For assistance with the Change User Password screen, please refer to article # 18055 - SBG6580 (v.8.9.x): Prompt to Change Default Admin Login.

  3. Move the mouse-cursor over the Wireless tab and select the Access Control sub-link. The Wireless - Access Control page appears.
  4. On the Wireless - Access Control page:
    a.   MAC Restrict Mode - Click the drop-down menu and choose the desired setting.

         - Disabled - Access Control is off.
         - Allowed - Denies access to all wireless clients except those clients listed in the MAC Addresses fields.
         - Denied - Allows access to all wireless clients except those listed in the MAC Addresses fields.

    b.   Enter the MAC addresses of the devices to allow or deny access in the MAC addresses fields.

         - If MAC Restrict Mode is set to Allowed - Enter the MAC addresses of the wireless clients that will be allowed access.
         - If MAC Restrict Mode is set to Denied - Enter the MAC addresses of the wireless clients to be denied access.

    c.   Click the Apply button.

NOTE: In the example below, the MAC Restrict Mode for the Primary Network has been set to Deny.  As a result, all wireless clients are allowed by Access Control to connect to the network except for one device, which has a MAC address of 00:16:CB:00:59:B6.  This device will be denied access.
