Question

How do I configure my SBG6580 for a WPA-PSK wireless connection?

Answer

The SBG6580 includes several options for securing the wireless LAN (WLAN).  WPA (WiFi Protected Access) -PSK (Pre Shared Key) provides the best data protection and access control.

The SBG6580 also allows for a wireless guest network (in addition to a wireless primary network).  The guest network provides access to the Internet, and also includes an option to prevent devices from communicating with primary wireless and wired connected client devices.

The Guest Network is disabled by default. This document describes how to configure the Guest Network to use WPA-PSK wireless encryption for the wireless network.

NOTE: Older wireless client cards may not support WPA or WPA2 encryption methods.  If a wireless card is not compatible with WPA or WPA2, either the gateway will need to be configured to use WEP encryption, or the wireless card will need to be replaced with a newer card that is compatible with WPA or WPA2 encryption.

To Configure WPA-PSK

  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page appears.

NOTE: By default the LAN IP address is 192.168.0.1. If the default address has been changed, enter the custom address in the address box.

  2. On the Login page:
    a.   Enter admin in the Username field.
    b.   Enter motorola in the Password field.
    c.   Click the Login button. The Home page appears.

NOTE: On firmware version 8.9.0.4 and later, the default admin password is required to be changed.  The Change User Password prompt will immediately appear after logging into the Web manager with the default admin password.  For assistance with the Change User Password screen, please refer to article # 18055 - SBG6580 (v.8.9.x): Prompt to Change Default Admin Login.

  4. On the Wireless - Guest Networks:
    a.   Guest Network - Click the drop-down tab and select Enabled.
    b.   Guest Network Name (SSID) - Change this setting to the desired name, or leave at the current setting.
    c.   Wireless Security - Click the drop-down tab and select WPA2-PSK + WPA-PSK.

NOTE: Enable WPA-PSK for backward compatibility, WPA2-PSK for maximum security, or both for maximum interoperability.  In the example below, both WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK are enabled.

    d.   Encryption - Click on the drop-down menu, and select TKIP+AES.

NOTE: Select AES for maximum security, or TKIP+AES for maximum interoperability.  In the example below, TKIP+AES is enabled.

    e.   Passphrase - Enter the desired WPA key (wireless password) to use.  The WPA key must be 8 - 63 characters.

NOTE:  Check the Show Passphrase box if it is desired to view the key.

    f.   Click the Apply button.

The SBG6580 is now configured to allow wireless client connections using WPA-PSK encryption.

To make a connection, the wireless client must have WPA-PSK or WPA-PSK2 encryption enabled and have the same WPA encryption key as the Motorola Wireless Gateway.  For assistance with the wireless client,
