Question

How do I change the admin username and/or password on my SBG6782?

Answer

When attempting to access the SBG6782 configuration menu, the gateway prompts for a username and password.  By default, the username is admin, and the password is motorola.  However, the gateway's admin account password can be changed.

NOTE 1: If the device is leased the option may not be available to change the username.

NOTE 2: For units leased or purchased from Shaw Communications, the default username and password are located on a black label at the bottom of the unit.

NOTE 3: If the gateway cannot be accessed using the default credentials, and the username and password are unknown, then the gateway will only be accessible by doing a factory reset.  Keep in mind that a factory reset will erase any custom settings, and may cause the Internet to be inaccessible.  For instructions on how to do a factory reset, please refer to Answer # 22423 - SBG6782 (v8.4.x) Factory Reset.

Login Considerations:

  • Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive.
  • Usernames and passwords can not contain the following characters (#,$,!,@,*).
  • Usernames and passwords go into effect immediately.  Restarting the gateway is not required for the username and/or password to take effect.
  • Assigning an administrator username and password does not affect communication to the Internet.

NOTE: Before changing the username and/or password, it is recommended to back up the configuration.  To back up the configuration, please refer to Answer # 22460 - SBG6782 (v8.4.x): Configuration Backup and Restore.
