Question
What should I know about enabling / disabling NAPT mode in the SBG6782?
Answer
By default, the SBG6782 operates as a gateway, and provides Internet access for multiple devices (up to 245 devices), connecting to the SBG6782 gateway.  When operating as a gateway, the SBG6782 serves as a modem and a router and keeps the devices in the Local Area Network (LAN) hidden.  In certain situations, it may be desired to disable the router function of the SBG6782 and have it operate as a modem only.  This can be accomplished by configuring the SBG6782 for Bridge Mode.  When Bridge Mode is enabled, the router function is turned off and the device directly connected to the SBG6782 will receive the Public IP address from the Cable Provider.  This document describes how to enable and disable Bridge Mode.

NOTE 1: Although the SBG6782 does not route traffic when Bridge Mode is enabled, it can still act as a firewall if the firewall settings in the SBG6782 are enabled.

NOTE 2: The Bridge Mode feature is not included with units that have been leased or purchased from Shaw Communications.

This is an ideal setup when:
  • Adding a firewall, router, or another NAT device to manage the Local Area Network
  • Hosting services or applications that can benefit from being directly accessible from the Internet

To Enable Bridge Mode

  1. Launch a Firefox or Safari browser.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.

NOTE: A browser message on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera, may appear when accessing the Web Manager.  The message includes 192.168.01 uses an unsupported protocol and ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH.  The Web Manager uses an earlier version of the TLS protocol and does not match the version allowed by the web browser.  Safari browsers on Apple PC and mobile devices are not impacted.  The workaround to access the Web Manager with a PC is to use the Firefox browser and set the TLS version to 1.  For workaround instructions refer to article # 19435 - 192.168.0.1 uses an unsupported protocol.

  2. A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager.  There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager.  For instructions to bypass the alert screen, refer to article # 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.

  3. On the Login page, enter admin or a customized username in the Username field.

  4. Enter motorola or a customized password in the Password field.

NOTE 1: On later versions of the SBG6782-AC, the Wi-Fi Security Key is used as the default admin password printed on the bottom white label.  For assistance with Web Manager Access, refer to article # 18755 – SBG6782-AC: Web Manager Access.

The SBG6782 has now been configured with NAPT mode disabled. Make sure that the devices that are to receive a public IP address are directly connected to the SBG6782's Ethernet ports. These devices will also need to be configured to obtain an IP address automatically.

To configure a Windows or Macintosh device to obtain an IP address automatically, please refer to the Answer link below. For all other devices, please contact the manufacturer.
