Question
How do I enable media sharing on my SBG7400AC2 Gateway?
Answer
The SBG7400AC2 USB 2.0 port supports connected hard drives with SAMBA and DLNA Media Sharing.  In addition to supporting USB 2.0 hard drives, the USB port can be used as a charging connection for mobile devices.  When file sharing is enabled, the contents of the attached USB storage device is accessible with read-write permissions in the home network.  When the DLNA Media Server is enabled, the contents of the USB storage device is accessible in the home network using a DLNA-certified player, such as game console, smart TV, and media players.  

NOTE: The USB port does NOT support Internet connection.

Requirements 
  • A USB 2.0 or 3.0 Storage Device. 

    NOTE 1: Supported file formats are FAT, FAT32, NTFS, HFS+, and GPT.

    NOTE 2: USB 3.0 devices require a power adapter when being used with the USB 2.0 port.
     
  • PC device to access the shared folders.
  • FTP client to access the FTP shared folders.
  • Client device must connect to the home network to access USB contents.
  • DNLA-certified player to access the media shared files.

Connect USB Storage Device
  1. Connect the USB storage device to the USB port on the front of the SBG7400AC2.
     
  2. Power on the USB storage device if applicable.

Enable USB File Sharing
  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page will appear.

    NOTE: A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager. There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager. For instructions to by-pass the alert screen, refer to article # 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.
     
  2. On the Login page, enter admin in the User Name field.
     
  3. Enter password or a customized password in the Password field.

    NOTE: When using the default password to login, it may be required to set a unique password to proceed to the Web Manager.  For assistance with Web Manager Access, refer to article # 18345 – SBG7400AC2: Web Manager Access.
     
  4. Click the Apply button.  The System Basic Setup page will appear.

  5. On the System Basic Setup page, click the USB link on the top menu.  The USB Status page will appear.
     
  6. To enable file sharing, on the left-hand menu, click the File Sharing link.  The File Sharing page will appear.
    • Check mark the Enable FTP Server box for FTP Server Access.
    • Check mark the Share Folder Access box for Share Folders Access. 
  7. Click the Apply button.

  8. The content can now be accessed from various client devices.

    NOTE 1: By default, access to the shared files is password protected.  To access the files, it is required to enter the admin username and password of the SBG7400AC2.  The default username is admin and the default password is password.

    NOTE 2: Windows 10 may require SMB v1 protocol enabled to access USB storage devices.  To enable SMB v1 protocol access Control Panel> Program and Features> Turn Windows Features on and off> locate the SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support folder and check the box for SMB 1.0/CIFS client.  Click the OK button.  Windows 10 will required a reboot and access to USB storage devices will be available. 
    • To access content using Share Folders on a Windows PC, launch Internet Explorer, then enter \\192.168.0.252 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The attached network device Share folder will appear.

    • To access the USB content using Share folders on Mac PC, in Finder, click on Go, then click on Connect to Server.  Enter smb://192.168.0.252 into the Server Address field and click the Connect button.

    • To access the USB content by FTP, launch an FTP client, and connect to ftp://192.168.0.252.

      NOTE: FTP access is only available on the local network.  Content will not be accessible from a remote location.
       
Enable USB Media Sharing
  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page will appear.

  2. Enter password or a customized password in the Password field.

  3. Click the Apply button.  The System Basic Setup page will appear.

  4. On the System Basic Setup page, click the USB link on the top menu.  The USB Status page will appear.
     
  5. On the left-hand menu, click the Media Sharing link.  The Media Sharing page will appear.
     
  6. Check mark the Enable Media Sharing box to enable media sharing.
     
  7. Leave the Media Sharing Name at default or enter a custom name.
     
  8. Click the Apply button.

  9. The content can now be accessed from various client devices.  To access media content on a media player, such as a blu-ray player, gaming console, mobile device or PC, launch the DLNA-certified player, then browse and locate the Media Sharing name.  Open the folder to access the media files.


Remove A Connected USB Device
  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page will appear.

    NOTE: A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager. There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager. For instructions to by-pass the alert screen, refer to article # 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.
     
  2. Enter password or a customized password in the Password field.

  3. Click the Apply button.  The System Basic Setup page will appear.

  4. On the System Basic Setup page, click the USB link on the top menu.  The USB Status page will appear.
     
  5. Click the bullet-point for the USB device to be removed and then click the Remove button.

    NOTE: To re-use the device, the USB drive will need to be removed from the USB port and re-inserted.
