SBG8300: IPv4 Firewall Setup

Question
How do I configure the firewall in my SBG8300 gateway? 
Answer
The SBG8300 firewall protects the home network by blocking applications, services, Internet traffic, and pings to the Gateway.  The firewall is enabled by default at Minimum Security (Low) setting to allow all application and Internet traffic.  The firewall can be disabled for troubleshooting purposes.  It is recommended to enable the firewall.  This document contains the following section:  
Firewall Security Setup
  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The https:// Redirect page will appear.  
     
  2. The SURFboard Web Manager is begin redirected to a more secure connection, click the Proceed button to continue.  The Gateway > Login page will appear.

  3. A security or private risk alert may appear on the web browser advising users to proceed with caution when accessing the Web Manager.  There is no risk in proceeding to the Web Manager.  For instructions to by-pass the alert screen, refer to article # 18181 - Alert Message for Web Manager Access.

    NOTE: The Home Network Wizard will appear if this is the first time accessing the Web Manager.  For assistance with the wizard, refer to article # 17969 - SBG8300: Web Manager First Time Login.
     
  4. Enter admin in the Username field and enter the custom password in the Password field.

    NOTE: If the Login page prompts for email address and password.  Log into the Web Manager with the email and password used when setting up the SURFboard Manager app with the SBG8300.
     
  5. Click the Login button.  The Gateway > Summary page will appear.

  6. On the left-hand menu, click the Firewall link, then click the IPv4 sub-menu link.  The Gateway > Firewall > IPv4 page will appear.
     
  7. Select the level of protection (High, Medium, Low or Custom).  The following are descriptions for each option: 
    • Maximum Security (High) - Block all applications, including voice applications (such as Gtalk, Skype) and P2P applications, but allow Internet, email, VPN, DNS, and iTunes services.
    • ​Typical Security (Medium) - Block P2P applications and pings to the Gateway, but allow all other traffic.
    • Minimum Security (Low) - Block no applications or traffic. (Default Setting).
  8. Enter the four-digit CAPTCHA code in the Type CAPTCHA Here field.
     
  9. Click the Save Settings button.  Changes take effect immediately.

Custom Security Setup

  7. Select the Custom Security radio button.  The page will expand to show the custom options.
     
  8. Select the desired traffic to block, or select Disable entire firewall to disable the firewall in the SBG8300.
     
  9. Enter the four-digit CAPTCHA code in the Type CAPTCHA Here field.
     
  10. Click the Save Settings button.  Changes take effect immediately.
