Question
How do I allow or restrict connections to the Wi-Fi network on the SVG2482AC gateway?
Answer
When Wi-Fi clients connect to the SVG2482AC, the client can connect to either the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz SSID.  The SVG2482AC MAC Filter Setting feature provides the ability to restrict Wi-Fi clients, such as smart phones and laptops, from accessing the Wi-Fi network.  The MAC address of the Wi-Fi client is added to the Wi-Fi Control List to allow or deny access to the Wi-Fi network on both the Wireless 2.4 GHz and Wireless 5 GHz or independently.  There are 3 options to restrict access:
  • Allow-All - All Wireless clients are allowed on the wireless network.  This is the default setting.
  • Allow - Wireless clients added to the list are allowed.  All other wireless clients are blocked.
  • Deny - Wireless clients added to the list are blocked.  All other wireless clients are allowed.
NOTE 1: It is recommended to setup the configuration with a device connected by an Ethernet cable to the SVG2482AC.  When using a Wi-Fi client to configure the Allow option, include the MAC address of the Wi-Fi client that is performing this setup.  This allows the Wi-Fi client back to the configuration page if needed. 

NOTE 2: Even if a client is allowed by the MAC Filter Setting to connect to the Wi-Fi network, it will still need an encryption key to connect (if encryption is enabled for that Wi-Fi network). 

Requirement

The Wi-Fi client's MAC Address is required to setup the MAC Filter Setting.  It can be found in the SVG2482AC Web Manager or from the client device's network information.

This document describes how to gather the client MAC address and setup the MAC Filter Setting feature in the
SVG2482AC.


MAC Filter Setting Setup
  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.  Enter http://10.0.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page will appear.
     
  2. On the Login page, enter admin in the Username field.
     
  3. Enter password in the Password field then click the Login button.  The Gateway > At a Glance page will appear.

    NOTE: A prompt to change the password appears when the SVG2482AC is using the default password.  To change the password click the OK button or click the Cancel button to bypass it.

  4. On the left-hand menu, click the Connection link then click the Wi-Fi sub-menu link.  The Gateway > Connection Wi-Fi page will appear.
     
  5. Under the MAC Filter Setting section, click the SSID drop-down menu to select the SSID to configure.

    NOTE 1:  The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs are configured independently.  If it is desired to specify access to both networks, the steps below will need to be repeated for each SSID.

    NOTE 2:  The 2.4 GHz SSID is selected to demonstrate.

  6. Determine the option to use for MAC Filtering Mode.

Configure MAC Address Control to Allow access

It is recommended to configure Allow access on both the Wireless 2.4 GHz and Wireless 5 GHz network to allow connections for the Wi-Fi clients added to the list.  Include the MAC address of the Wi-Fi client that is performing this setup to allow access to the Wi-Fi network.  This allows the Wi-Fi client back to the configuration page if needed. 
 
  1. Click the MAC Filtering Mode drop-down menu and select the Allow option.

  2. To add a recently connected device, locate the device under Auto-Learned Wi-Fi Devices and click the ADD button. The device will now appear in the Wi-Fi Control List.

  3. To add a device that is not currently connected, under Manually-Added Wi-Fi Devices, enter a unique device name in the Device Name field and enter the device's MAC address in the MAC Address field.

    NOTE:  To locate the MAC address of a Wi-Fi device that is not currently connected, check the device documentation for instructions.
     
  4.  Click the ADD button.  The device will now appear in the Wi-Fi Control List.

    NOTE: Repeat steps 2-4 to add additional MAC Addresses.
     
  5. Click the Save Filter Setting button.

    NOTE 1:  If the setup is configured while using a Wi-Fi client, the Wi-Fi connection may drop after clicking the Save Filter Setting button, and may require a manual reconnect to the Wi-Fi network when it is back up.

    NOTE 2:  In the example below, the MAC Address Filtering Type for the Wireless 2.4 GHz has been set to Allow.  As a result, only Wi-Fi clients added to the Wi-Fi Control List are allowed on the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.  Wi-Fi clients not on the list are blocked from connecting to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.

    NOTE 3:  It is recommended to also configure the 5 GHz SSID for Allow.  If desired, repeat steps 3-5 for the 5 GHz SSID.

Configure MAC Address Control to Deny access.
 
It is recommended to configure Deny access on both the Wireless 2.4 GHz and Wireless 5 GHz networks to deny connections for the Wi-Fi clients added to the list. 
  1. Click the MAC Filtering Mode drop-down menu and select the Deny option.
