Question
How do I change the wireless channel in the TG862?
Answer

When using a wireless connection, interference may occur.  One variable may include other Wireless Access Points within the surrounding area.  If those Wireless Access Points are using the same wireless channel, this may cause interference.  When experiencing wireless interference when other wireless access points are present in the surrounding area, changing the wireless channel within the TG862 gateway can improve connectivity.  By default, the TG862 is set at Automatic.  This document describes how to change the wireless channel in the TG862 gateway.

CAUTION:  When changing the wireless channel, all wireless devices on the network will lose connection for a few moments.

To Change the Wireless Channel

  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Enter http://10.0.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page appears.

NOTE: By default the LAN IP address is 10.0.0.1. If the default address has been changed, enter the custom address in the address box.

  2. On the Login page:
    a.   Enter admin in the Username field.
    b.   Enter password in the Password field.
    c.   Click the Login button.  The Gateway > At a Glance page appears.

  3. In the left-hand menu, click on Gateway.  A sub-menu appears.
  4. In the sub-menu, click on Connection.  A second sub-menu appears.
  5. In the second sub-menu, click on WiFi.  The Gateway > Connection >WiFi page appears.
  6. On the Gateway > Connection >WiFi page, click the Edit button.  The Gateway > Connection > WiFi > Edit 2.4 GHz page appears.
  7. On the Gateway > Connection > WiFi > Edit 2.4 GHz page:
    a.   Channel Selection - Select Manual.
    b.   Channel - Click on the drop-down menu, and select a different channel than what is currently displayed.

NOTE 1: It is recommended to leave the Channel Selection default setting at Automatic and restart the TG862.  The best Wi-Fi channel will be selected upon restart.  Keep in mind that the connected Wi-Fi clients temporary lose Internet connection when the TG862 is restarting.

NOTE 2: When choosing to set the Wi-Fi channel, it is recommended to set the channel to 1, 6 or 11 for better performance and stability because they do not overlap.  Other Wi-Fi channels overlap and degrade performance.

c    Click the Save Settings button.

NOTE 1:  A reboot of the unit is not required for changes to take effect.
NOTE 2:  The wireless connection will drop, but will automatically re-establish in a few moments.
