Windows and MAC OS X: Finding the MAC address

Question
How can I locate the MAC address on a Windows or Mac computer?
Answer

There may be situations in which the MAC address of a specific device needs to be located. This document will show how to locate the MAC address for a Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh system. For all other devices, please refer to the manufacturer.

Windows Vista

  1. Click on Start.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Click on Network and Internet. If this option does not appear in the Control Panel, skip down to step 4.
  4. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
 
  • In the Network and Sharing Center window:
    a.   Locate Local Area Connection in the Network (Private Network) section
    b.   Click on View status.

  • In the Local Area Connection Status screen, click the Details button.

Windows XP

  • In the Network Connection Details window, the MAC address is displayed as the Physical Address (as shown below).

    1. Click on Start.
    2. Click on Control Panel.
    3. Click on Network and Internet Connections. If this option does not appear in the Control Panel, skip down to step 4.
    4. Click on Network Connections.
    5. Double-click the Local Area Connection icon.
    6. On the Local Area Connection Status screen, click on the Support tab.

  • Click the Details button.

Mac Leopard 10.5.x

  • The MAC address will be listed here as the Physical Address (as shown below).

    1. Click the Apple icon on the upper left-hand corner.
    2. Select System Preferences.

  • Click the Network icon in Internet & Network section.
  • Select Built-in Ethernet from the list and click on Advanced

Mac Tiger 10.4.x

  • Click on the Ethernet tab on the right side of the window. The MAC address is displayed as the Ethernet ID (as shown below).

    1. Click the Apple icon on the upper left-hand corner.
    2. Select System Preferences

  • Click the Network icon in Internet & Network section.
  • Select Built-in Ethernet from the list and click the Configure button.

  • Click on the Ethernet tab on the right side of the window. The MAC address is displayed as the Ethernet ID (as shown below).
