Question
How do I configure a static WAN IP on the mAX Router?
Answer

Residential networking devices, like the mAX router come ready out-of-the-box to be configured by the Service Provider using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).  Static IP Addresses are common with Enterprise accounts but rare with residential customers unless they pay an additional fee for a static WAN IP.  A static WAN IP would be necessary if a DMZ, Port Forwarding, or IP Passthrough setup needs to be configured on the Home Network to be guaranteed the same WAN IP.  The static WAN IP has to be manually entered into a network access point in order for it to be assigned correctly.  The SURFboard mAX™ app can be used to configure a static WAN IP Address for the mAX router.  Due to the various setup procedures, setting a static WAN IP can only be done after the mAX router has been onboarded successfully.  This document describes how to manually configure a static WAN IP using the SURFboard mAX app.

Requirements

  • Gather all Network information prior to disconnecting the previous Internet setup
  • Static WAN IP Address from ISP
  • Subnet Mask
  • Default Gateway IP Address
  • DNS Addresses (Primary and Secondary)
  • The mAX Router MUST be onboarded before proceeding

Configure Static WAN IP Address

  1. Open the SURFboard mAX™ app and tap the Hamburger Menu in the top left corner.
  2. From the Network Settings menu, select Advanced.
Right click on the image to save it to your computer.

  1. Select WAN IP Configuration, from the Advanced Network Settings screen.
Right click on the image to save it to your computer.

  1. Tap on STATIC and manually enter the Network information.
  • NOTE: The WAN Network information is required to successfully assign a static IP to the mAX router.  This network information does not auto-populate but is available from the ISP.
Right click on the image to save it to your computer.

Setup Challenges

Modem + Router:
  • Previous Network set up will have working Internet access, the mAX router setup will act as a simple plug-and-play installation.
  • A Double NAT configuration will be required to onboard the mAX router.
  • After onboarding is complete, the static WAN IP can now be assigned to the mAX router on the SURFboard mAX™ app - Advanced settings.
  • The mAX router will replace the previous router, removing it from the Network set up.
  • A Reboot MUST be performed after these settings have been applied on both devices.
Gateway with Integrated Wi-Fi:
  • Previous Network set up will have working Internet access, the mAX router setup will act as a simple plug-and-play installation.
  • A Double NAT configuration will be required to onboard the mAX router.
  • After onboarding is complete, the Gateway should be configured into Bridge mode, to eliminate any SSID conflicts.
  • The static WAN IP Reservation should be entered into the Gateway's web manager after onboarding is complete.
  • From the SURFboard mAX™ app - Advanced settings, the static WAN IP can now be assigned to the mAX router.
  • A Reboot MUST be performed after these settings have been applied on both devices.
AT&T U-Verse:
  • Previous Network set up will have working Internet access, the mAX router setup will act as a simple plug-and-play installation.
  • A Triple NAT configuration will be required to onboard the mAX router, if no prior configuration is done on the U-Verse device.
  • A Double NAT configuration will be required if the first router is removed before onboarding, since the U-Verse device can authenticate to be online without a router connected.
  • After onboarding is complete, the U-Verse device should be configured for IP Passthrough.
  • From the SURFboard mAX™ app - Advanced settings, the static WAN IP can now be assigned to the mAX router.
  • A Reboot MUST be performed after these settings have been applied on both devices.

Cable Modem ONLY:

  • If the Cable modem is assigned a static IP address, the mAX router will not get assigned the static IP since it uses DHCP by default.
  • The mAX router will have to be fully onboarded prior to being assigned the static IP address.
  • There currently is no option to configure a static WAN IP until you have onboarded and have access to the SURFboard mAX™ app - Advanced settings.
