Question
How do I setup WEP encryption for the Wireless Network on my TG862?
Answer

The TG862 includes configuration options for WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption, which is used to secure network data transmitted over the wireless (Wi-Fi) connection. Depending on the capability of the client wireless card, 64-bit or 128-bit WEP Encryption can be enabled for IP traffic on the LAN.  By default, the wireless network is enabled, and uses WPA-PSK encryption.

This document describes how to configure the Wireless Network to use WEP wireless encryption.

NOTE: Enabling WEP encryption will disable Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).


To Configure WEP

  1. Launch a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Enter http://10.0.0.1 into the address box, and press the Enter key.  The Login page appears.

    NOTE: By default the LAN IP address is 10.0.0.1. If the default address has been changed, enter the custom address in the address box.
     
  2. On the Login page:
    a.   Enter admin in the Username field.
    b.   Enter password in the Password field.
    c.   Click the Login button.  The Gateway > At a Glance page appears.

  3. In the left-hand menu, click on Gateway.  A sub-menu appears.
  4. In the sub-menu, click on Connection.  A second sub-menu appears.
  5. In the second sub-menu, click on WiFi.  The Gateway > Connection > WiFi page appears.
  6. On the Gateway > Connection > WiFi page, click the Add WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) Client button.  The Gateway > Connection > Wireless > Add Wireless Client page appears.
  7. On the Gateway > Connection > Wireless > Add Wireless Client page:
    a.   WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) - Click on the Disabled button.
    b.   Click the Cancel button.  The Gateway > Connection > WiFi page reappears.

          NOTE: WPS will still remain disabled when clicking the Cancel button.

  8. On the Gateway > Connection > WiFi page, click the Edit button.  The Gateway > Connection > Wireless > Edit 2.4 GHz page appears.
  9. On the Gateway > Connection > Wireless > Edit 2.4 GHz page:
    a.   Network Name (SSID) - Enter the desired network name of choice, or leave at the current setting.
    b.   Security Mode - Click the drop-down menu, and select WEP 64 (Risky) or WEP 128 (Risky).

          NOTE 1: WEP 64 (Risky) provides 64-bit encryption, while WEP 128 (Risky) provides 128-bit encryption.

          NOTE 2: Select WEP 64 (Risky) for backward compatibility or WEP 128 (Risky) for maximum WEP security.  In the example below, WEP 64 (Risky) is selected.

    c.   Channel Selection - Leave at default, which is Automatic.
    d.   Network Password - Enter the desired WEP key (wireless password) to use.  The WEP key must be 10 characters for 64-bit, or 26 characters for 128-bit..  

          NOTE 1:  WEP keys use hexadecimal characters, which are 0 - 9 and a - f.  For best security, it is recommended to avoid the use of all the same characters.  

          EXAMPLES:
          64 bit: 02468ace02
          128 bit: 0123456789abcdef0123456789
            
          NOTE 2:  Make a note of this password, as it will be needed for the wireless client(s) to connect.

    e.   Broadcast Network Name (SSID) - Leave this option checked.
    f.    Click the Save Settings button.

          NOTE: A reboot of the unit is not required for changes to take effect.

The TG862 is now configured to allow wireless client connections using WEP encryption.
